Co-Founder Mia Styling a Bride’s Hair at Briar Barn Inn
I am sure you have heard the advice, “Don’t wash your hair every day.” While there is some truth to the statement, keeping your hair dirty had gone too far! Dirty hair does not necessarily mean your hair is healthy. The way you clean and take care of your hair on a daily basis keeps your hair and scalp healthy and looking fresh! Whether you are preparing your hair for an upcoming wedding or looking for day-to-day tips, keep reading to learn more dirty hair secrets from beauty experts here at Boston Beauty Network.
What is Dirty Hair?
By definition, dirty hair is when the oils on your hair and scalp build up with dirt and dust in the environment. The more days you go without washing your hair, the more build there is on your scalp. It weighs down your hair and makes it look dull and greasy. Once you feel it getting dirty, the oils in your hair are joined by more dirt, dust, and pollution. While some build-up in your hair is ok for a day or two, all these things can potentially irritate and damage your scalp and hair when left for too long. I know we all know this feeling!
What Your Stylist Wants You to Know
When you are a bride or a bridesmaid in a wedding a big question is, how should you show up with your hair? There is a lot of misinformation out there that says not to wash your hair, but no artist ever wants super dirty hair in their chair. It’s actually a little-known saying in the industry, “No dirty hair in my chair.”
Everyone has to take their own hair into consideration. If your hair gets super oily, then fresh-washed hair is an ideal styling base to start with. If you feel as though your hair is super soft and can be “too clean” to hold a style, then perhaps day-old hair will be a perfect base. We want to create a finished look that starts with beautiful clean hair, so we always tell our clients to come the way you feel best!
When you come in for a trial before your wedding we use our expertise to help you decide if you should wash your hair the day of or not! Most often, we recommend getting a blowdry done the day of your rehearsal dinner so we can style your hair as you wish on your wedding day and you get all the benefits of some oil in your hair to hold everything in place.

How to Properly Wash Your Dirty Hair
Properly and frequently washing your hair is key to healthy hair! If you find yourself reaching for dry shampoo more than once, it is time for a wash! One of the things I see clients overlook is not washing your hair properly.
Here at Boston Beauty Network, we recommend washing your hair with two shampoos followed by a conditioner. The first shampoo gets all of the build-up moving. The second shampoo will help remove any remaining build-up on your scalp. No need to use a huge amount of shampoo! Squeeze a quarter size into your palm, but you may need slightly more or less depending on your hair length. After rinsing your hair thoroughly, use your fingers to comb conditioner into your hair at halfway point to really concentrate on the ends and not the scalp.
The Co-founders of BBN, Katie and Mia, have different types of hair and this is what they have found works for them! Katie’s hair tends to lack volume so, she has tried pretty much all the texture shampoos out there. Mia on the other hand has thick hair that can go on for days! If Mia finds herself reaching for the dry shampoo, she knows she should probably be washing her hair!
What to Put on Your Hair Pre-Blowdry
Once your hair is clean and towel dried, add in some product to keep it clean longer and looking gorgeous! I find a cream or leave-in conditioner helps to keep your hair smooth and protected from any heat tools but doesn’t weigh it down.
I love Orbie Straight Away Smoothing Blowout Hair Cream. This is a powerful, heat-protective blowout cream to coax waves, curls, and coils into sleek, straight styles that last. We also swear by Moroccan Oil’s Scalp Balance. They have oil drops for oily hair and for dry scalp to add use after washing your hair. Of course, we all have those days of a quick wash and air dry and that is fine too!
Amika Un.Done, which is featured in the first picture, is one of your favorite matte texture sprays that provide lasting volume once your hair is blow-dried. Both Katie and I are obsessed!
Everything in Moderation
Using dry shampoos and heat tools in moderation is the best way to care for your hair! Dry shampoos are meant to be a holdover for a day, maybe two, but no more than that! We see dry shampoos being overused far too often and then your scalp is getting dirtier and dirtier. This can cause breakage and may cause you to lose your hair over time! Yikes! Read more about the surprising damage of dry shampoos from Byrdie.
Instead of reaching for your blow dryer or hair curler every day, try to use heat tools only when needed. Heat damage on top of dirty hair is not a good mix! Play with different styles like a low bun, an air dryer look, or a braid instead of using heat.
